Dear participants in the World Junior Dance Festival

Ladies and gentlemen

On behalf of the city of Jyväskylä, I have the privilege to heartily welcome you all to the reception of the City.

I am Anna-Leena Kärkkäinen, vice-chair of the Board of Youth Issues of the city.

Jyväskylä, whose population amounts to nearly 130,000 people, is a dynamic Human Technology City. The Jyväskylä region is one of the five growth centers in Finland, and Jyväskylä is the seventh biggest town in Finland. It is famous for its excellent achievements in science and technology, high-quality cultural activities and beautiful natural environment.

Jyväskylä’s areas of expertise are IT and electronics technology, paper machine and papermaking technology, as well as bio-, nano-, environmental and wellness technologies.

Jyväskylä is famous for its educational possibilities. For over 150 years, Jyväskylä has been a centre of Finnish education. There are 45.000 pupils and students in Jyväskylä - in other words, nearly every third person is a pupil or a student. The University of Jyväskylä, the JAMK University of Applied Sciences and the Air Force Academy provide some of Finland's most highly sought after university places.

The world famous architect Alvar Aalto lived and attended school in Jyväskylä and almost thirty buildings designed by Aalto are to be found in the city, more than anywhere else.

For almost sixty years now the Finnish round of the world rally championship, staged in Jyväskylä every August, has been selected as the best organised rally in the WRC calendar. Jyväskylä is also Finland’s second most popular city for fairs and exhibitions and a highly popular venue for congresses and conferences.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Jyväskylä offers a wide range of high-quality dance activities.

The number of dance enthusiasts has been increasing in recent years, and people from all age groups have taken up dancing as a hobby. Significant championships and awards have also been won in several categories of dancing. In all of its forms, dancing is a versatile physical activity which also promotes creativity and social skills.

The Jyväskylä Junior Dance Festival is a prime example of the co-operation between professionals and enthusiasts in the sector, also at the international level.

The Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences at the University of Jyväskylä is the only faculty of its kind in Finland. Education and research in the field is highly concentrated to Jyväskylä. In the field of dance, the city also boasts a large number of top professionals working as teachers.

A special thank you goes to the Dance Sport Club Tepika for arranging this event and for its long-term work in the field of dancing. I would also like to thank everyone who has helped in organising this event.

I wish success as well as unforgettable and happy moments in Jyväskylä to all participants of the Junior Dance Festival. I also hope that you will find time to make new friends during the event.
